Deer Management in Westchester

Management of the White Tailed Deer in the Westchester Area

Report of the White Tailed Deer and Forest Regeneration in Westchester

The population of white tailed deer is almost 10 times higher than what our habitat can support. The resulting heavy deer browsing is highly detrimental to our woodland and gardens, with severe impact on the variety and populations of insects, plants and animals. It is clear that a healthy biodiversity in Westchester can only be restored if we manage the white tailed deer population. Deer management is supported by both the county and the NY DEC, but it is up to the towns to incorporate deer management into their conservation efforts.
